Oh my god this new blogger interface is terrifying. I will try to make a coherent post but if all my photos are upside down, it's not my FAULT.
Look I am just going to add some photos of androids. And robots. And maybe cyborgs. Look, the terminology isn't important JUST LOOK AT THE PHOTOS
I, Robot (I have never seen this film):
Bicentennial Man: (This film fills me with sorrow, god, I can't even remember if this is what he actually looked like ever):
Kryten:
I mean-
Data:
"Actroid"(this would be really boring for us; it's just a person, especially when tiny and pixellated. I guess the same goes for Data but he is wearing a cowboy hat and I can't bring him down.):
Asimo:
C3PO and R2 (something non humanoid would be pretty cool, actually):
For example, my favourite Star Wars robot:
ROBOCOP
Terminator (also just a human with skin, albeit a hulking Arnie)
and the jerk terminator (DOGGET NO)
I don't know whether we want to define a world and then figure out what robots they would love and nurture or come up with a rad design and fit the world to it or WHAT

From what I remember between my wracking sobs he looked like that for about five minutes before they gave him a face upgrade. ALSO OH MY GOD DRUBBINS NO I DIDN'T WANT TO BELIEVE YOU, THAT'S TERRIBLE
ReplyDeleteI think the two can be worked up together. I think there should be like... a law? against robots looking TOO humanlike. Humans can get cyborg attachments that look completely natural but robots gotta' not. Along that vein different robots are going to look different according to task, so officebot could be dumb and boxey because it is essentially a desk, but our guy is doing face to face interaction with humanity so it would make sense that he's more humanoid? I'm aware I'm saying super obvious things at this point.
I think we need to peg a world before we can properly make a robot, though. Like a 'utopia' is going to have a different type of robot detective to a slumcity. We only really need the basics down and then one design can start to inspire the other.
(which I think would need to be talked about in a live-chat? is there a time we could set up something like that, maybe with a whiteboard if you wanted to draw?)
I wish Portal 2 hadn't peaked the 'loaner robot body' set up. Once somebody has thought up a valid reason to put a personality in a potato there's not much more you can bring to the table. I still like the idea of a section where you broke too many bodies so the precinct gives you a dumb one that means you have to get your buddy to do everything for you. SIGH. STUPID VALVE.
Is there a good multiplayer whiteboard anywhere? we can skype chat (does your mic work with skype) and doodle.
ReplyDeleteHahaha! What episode is that StarWars robot in? Brilliant design.
ReplyDeleteWe don't really need a white board, just a pad of paper and some marker pens - can easily have a meeting on skype. When is a good time?
I think obviously there needs to be a difference between a human and a robot in terms of physical appearance. Just thinking about what cop-bot might need to help him do his job. Ability to record things people say, some sort of built-in crowd dispersion mechanic, ability to go up stairs, see in the dark un-detected, analyse samples on the fly, store evidence in it's belly or head or something... dunno. Just ideas. I think if I was going to make a cop-bot I'd probably make it have facial expressions - one for express-concern, one for intimidate, maybe a neutral one as well.
I didn't mean in real life, haha! obviously, we have a couple of real world whiteboards. I meant like an online one so that Liz can listen to what we're saying, go 'like this?' and we can feedback as she does it (or change it ourselves). It's just a fun, non-vital addition to online meetings.
DeleteYeah! I ask myself questions like that but then loopback to the fact we don't really have basics down? like what's it's rank, does it expect antagonism? does it do other jobs, like paperwork, riotpolicing (are there riots? are there riots that the police actually bother trying to stop?), petty crime, beatcop stuff?
I love the idea of like super simple facial expressions, both stylistically and in real life. Vitas's robot outfit, and Daft Punk! The Iron Giant! basic emotes. It would be one- adorable, 2- in real life it avoids the valley of the uncanny aspect while keeping something that people can respond to so there's real justification? Liz'd be able to peg something super nice, too, design wise. See what faces we can give him with a minimal amount of range.
'I didn't do it, I swear!'
:/ 'SIR I SUSPECT YOUR TESTIMONY IS AT BEST A FABRICATION
then one day his facial response nodes get messed up
:D THIS IS HIGHLY CONFUSING
buddy: i think this is an improvement
8O HUMAN PLEASE
buddy: no i am serious maybe this isn't a bug, maybe it's an upgrade
;) GO AND GET HELP
buddy: why did they even program you to wink
HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! YES! :D That'd be awesome. (The face glitch thing that is.)
DeleteYou are right about us not having the basics down. I propose we make some detailed character sheets.
Although first we should probably identify the key aspects of the story.
