We need to nail a style. I've had a poke around and found screens of some cool 2d games:
Machinarium
Gabriel Knight: Sins of Fathers
Space Quest 6
More Space Quest stuff here: http://hardcoregaming101.net/spacequest/spacequest.htm
Sam and Max Hit the Road
The Dig
Broken Sword (these games are gorgeous)
I think my favourite styles in this list are Gabriel Knight: Sins of Fathers, The Dig, and Beneath a Steel Sky. Tempted to add broken sword to that list too, but it's not quite as good in my opinion. I like the pixel art look, also the characters proportions being somewhat realistic.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I really liked about Gemini Rue (I'm sure it's not the only game to do it) is how the dialogue box was set up.

It made text very easy to read, also I liked seeing a close up of the characters face.
Speaking of cool looking games, SuperBrothers: Sword and Sourcery (the game I'm playing at the moment) is well worth a look at. http://youtu.be/Xk2fjtryfYc
I'm glad we're on the same wavelength with the style! Those are my faves, too. Agreed on the Gemini Rue dialogue thing, but I'm also fond of The Dig and Broken Sword's floating dialogue.
ReplyDeleteI like the old-school-ness of the floating dialogues but I sometimes find it a bit hard to read text in games like that. We could always use a pixelated font to preserve the look.
ReplyDeleteThats true. I do really like the dialogue box and the image of the character that Gemini Rue did. I'd love it if ours could change with the characters location OR be a personal avatar that they have obviously chosen themselves.
ReplyDeleteDamn, played Beneath the Steal Sky for several hours, directly after promising Anita that I'd fix our lives, I died doing something really stupid. No save game. I'll have to give myself a few days (in real time) to get over this.
ReplyDeleteJoey makes the game I think, what a character. Also I like the navigational system.
